Welcome to EuroScene 1 - the first CD-ROM dedicated to the talents of
Europe's finest computer artists. The structure of this disc is based
around the Amiga filesystems of FUNET, a long-established Internet FTP
<free software distribution> site. Additional releases, files, utilities
and authoring was completed by Almathera.
1. THE EUROSCENE
----------------
For the uninitiated, EuroScene is a hotbed of computer talent. It
originally began as small frontends for pirated software, usually games.
And it simply took off from there. As the quality and originality of the
demos and frontends surpassed the quality of the games, the 'scene
production' artform became an end in itself.
Nowadays, the 'Scene acts in many ways. A huge international friendship
movement. A playground for new routines, many of which push the machine
far beyond expected capabilities. A chance for rising talent to get
noticed - by the software houses <Just ask Silents Sweden about Pinball
Dreams>, a chance for developers FROM the software houses to do something
different than platformers all day <Hello, Core ;->, and infinite
opportunities for simply making global contact and having a good time.
For the regular FrEaKs!, this disc contains the first big attempt at a
nE@r-d3f!n!t!v3 k0ll3ct!0n of Sc3n3 WaR3Z, d00dZ. <And no, the keyboard
hasn't died> It costs less than the cost of discs for the full run of
EuroChart. Stuff we're missing is stuff we couldn't get hold of. We did
our best - hope you enjoy it. It'll save the swappers a disk or two
hundred, anyway. And if your group has got 2 megs or more of archived
material on this disc <total of audio, gfx, diskmags and demos> you can
recieve a FREE COPY <or MORE> of this CD. <4 megs = 2 free CDs, 6 megs =
3, &tc. Get in touch with us at the usual address>
2. THIS CD-ROM
--------------
Almost all of the software on this disc is archived, for mounting on BBS
systems. <Time is money in this day and age, and the 'phone companies
charge as such...> However, we've left a few highlights and useful
materials ready-to-run from CD, where size is not a problem, and a few
megabytes of hard drive can be saved. The complete archive filelist can be
found in the file INDEX, with a slightly different version in INDEX.BBS,
showing full file paths and byte counts - these files are set up to be
easily shredded with any good text editor, making BBS-Index generation
fairly easy.
The archive directories have no icons in them, to speed up access. The
directory icons have been set up to show items as filenames, a la Aminet
CD, an option only available under KickStart 2.x and above. Attack the
disc with DirectoryOpus or one of it's zillion clones, for best effect.
The disc is divided into 5 main archive file areas, each with its own
heirarchy of directories:
demos/
The main area of the disc, with productions from teams
of coders, musicians and graphic artists from around 1988
right up to date. The demos, intros <small demonstrations
usually introducing a larger work>, trackmos, dentros,
mentros, whatever they're called, they're in here. Music
discs and slideshows are here as well. Sorted according to
group name. For example, Sanity's "Interference" can be
found as demos/sanity/interference.dms - pretty easy, no?
audio/modules/
audio/musicians/
audio/misc/
Music from Europe and beyond, with soundtracks of the top team
productions, as well as independant releases worthy of hearing.
Sorted by musician's 'Scene handle <where known> in subdirectories
from audio/musicians/, music formats <when not using the
Noise/Protracker 'de facto' standard> in audio/misc/, otherwise
unsorted in audio/modules/.
graphics/artists/
graphics/groups/
The leading 'Scene artists are open for viewing, according to
artist name <where known> in graphics/artists/, and by demo group
for general logos and clip-art in graphics/groups/. All files are
archived Amiga format IFF or HAM images.
diskmags/
The 'Scene's own media and news coverage - announcements, reviews,
heated debate, independant charts and chat. Sorted according
to title of magazine, for example diskmags/eurocharts/.
events/tg93/
events/party93/
events/tg94/
Releases from the last few major demo 'parties', where computer
creativity is intense and the lure of top-end hardware adds a
little spice to the proceedings. Releases are sorted into the
various separate competition categories. They can also be found in
the audio, graphics and demo heirarchies, but have also been
brought together for easy reference. events/tg93/ and events/tg94/
are The Gathering releases from this and last year in Norway,
events/party93/ contains the results from The Party 3 <December 93,
Denmark>
Other additional file areas include:
tools/
Ready-to-run archive retrieval programs, and extra utilitites to
help compatibility of older software that uses hardware-specific
tricks of the old machines to achieve stunning effects.
useful/
The Tools <and other extras> segment in archived form, for BBS
callers to download and use with the rest of the disc. Sysops,
please ensure this directory is available to your users.
text/
Archived versions of the two following directories as well as the
CBM AmigaGuide distribution archive - Amiga users will need to
unpack Amigaguide and install it on their system as
sys:Utilities/AmigaGuide in order to use the Amigaguide reference
files on this disc.
amigademolist/
A comprehensive index of virtually every 'Scene release, sorted by
group name, demo party release details, hardware requirements and
compatibility and availability on the Internet. Set up in
AmigaGuide format as well as flat ASCII text and ANSI text with
highlighting controlcodes.
bdgtti_2.2/
"Big Dummy's Guide To The Internet" - FUNET is on the Internet, so
here's what is probably the best text yet about getting to grips
with the biggest 'Net yet. Amigaguide format only.
funet/
The FUNET system administration team and the Amiga file managers
tell you about themselves. Without the previous work of FUNET, and
more importantly, the Amiga-admin, this disc would have been
impossible.
specials/
A few of the best large productions, that take up a disk or 3 and
are CD-installable.
resources/
Goodies for the creative 'Scene members amongst us. Various
subdirectories, mostly archived.
3. PROBLEMS, WARNINGS
---------------------
Knowledge of the DOS commands on your system will be helpful in unpacking
this disc. Please note that although all demos have been tested, some
contain bad language that some viewers may find offensive, and some may not
work on all Amiga configurations. The Amiga Demo List can help with
compatibility problems, as can the fallback tools in tools/ and useful/.
Many disks will only work properly on PAL (Europe, UK, Australia) systems.
If your Amiga system supports both NTSC and PAL video, try using PAL.
Also, some of the graphics are a little risque, and may be unsuitable for
young children.
Epilepsy warning: English
-------------------------
Some people are liable to have an epileptic seizure or loss of
consciousness when exposed to flashing lights or certain normal conditions
of everyday life. Such persons could risk a seizure while watching
televised images or while playing certain video games, and this can occur
even if there have been no previous medical problems or experience of
epilepsy. If you or a member of your family has ever shown epileptic
symptoms <seizure or loss of consciousness> when exposed to flickering
lights, consult your doctor before playing. Parents should supervise their
children's use of video games. If you or your children experience any of
the following symptoms - dizziness, altered vision, eye or muscle twitches,
loss of consciousness, disorientation, involuntary movements or convulsions
- discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor.
Avertissement sur l'épilepsie: Français
---------------------------------------
4. FILENAMES, FILEFORMATS, ARCHIVERS, OPERATING SYSTEMS
-------------------------------------------------------
Directory names are limited to 8+3 characters under MS-DOS - some group and
artist, musician and group names had to be changed to keep everything
accessible. These changes are documented in the .cut files in the main
archive directories.
To ease clarity for sensible, ISO level 2 friendly operating systems, all
filenames have been left at their full length. MS-DOS compatibility
<Conflicts within the 8+3 ranges> have been cured in the following way:
Example problem filename: <in demos/sballs>
New Filename Under MS-DOS Meaning
A_DESTINATIONUNKNOWN.DMS A_DESTIN.DMS "Destination Unknown", first half
B_DESTINATIONUNKNOWN.DMS B_DESTIN.DMS "Destination Unknown", second half
Old filenames Under MS-DOS Meaning
DESTINATIONUNKNOWN_A.DMS DESTINAT.DMS "Destination Unknown", first half
DESTINATIONUNKNOWN_A.DMS DESTINAT.DMS "Destination Unknown", second half
You see the problem. Thank you the world's most popular operating system.
Short of crunching the filenames, this is the easiest way of making
filenames unique over the 8+3 range. Luckily there's only a few
directories in which multiple filename rethinks are needed, and in those,
all the pairs of files are at the head of the flist if you order
alphabetically. <The ISO image for this disc is set up to alphabetically
do filenames, with optimization for directory lists to speed things up>
As to archives - file-based productions are generally packed with LhA
<filename.LHA>, trackdisk-based productions with DMS <filename.DMS> and
occasionally ZOOM <filename.ZOM> - all the archive tools can be found in
tools/ and useful/ - there's a Unix version of LHA and a dms-tester in
useful/ as well.
